Bali 100 Years Ago

I came across these old recordings recently when reading Pete’s Bali diary.

The videos show life in Bali in 1910 and in the 1930s, precious contemporary documents.

This one is certainly not from 1946, these recordings were made most likely in the 1930s:

Bali Travelogue Of The Week

“Road to Bali sans Bob Hope”

Drove past a sign which read, “AGUS’S CO-OPERATIVE ART CENTER”. If the Balinese can correctly handle the possessive apostrophe, why can’t the Australians? Saw a lot of signs on lamp-posts and walls which suggested, “TALK LESS, DO MORE.” What a great sign to stick on the walls of Parliament House in Canberra!

Bali Arts Festival 2009

The 31st Annual Bali Arts Festival is being held from 13 June until 11 July this year. The President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is scheduled to open the festival in Denpasar on June 13.

The festival is a wonderful spectacle and a great introduction to Balinese artistic traditions and culture. Events take place throughout each day for an entire month and include handicraft exhibitions, cultural performances, music, classical palace dances and historical exhibitions. 180 art performances from 12 provinces in Indonesia and eight foreign countries - South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, India, China and Mexico and the United States.

It is the biggest event of its kind in the country and you really should try to attend at least one evening. Please don’t mind the long way to Denpasar and the sometimes poor organization of the event, the great performances and atmosphere will make up for that.

Fairy-tale Rest Room at Murni’s Warung

Yesterday seen at Murni’s in Ubud: a rest room kind out of fairyland.

Murni’s Warung has four open-air levels that step down the steep hillside overlooking the river and it is one of Ubud’s most established restaurants.
